About The Position

The Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) is seeking an experienced leader to serve as the Corrections Security Manager Senior for Institutions. This position acts as an executive and strategic operational partner to the Deputy Director for Institutions, offering senior-level leadership, analysis, training, and direct operational support for the oversight of VADOC's institutional security operations. The role is crucial for promoting safe, secure, and effective correctional operations, with a focus on institutional security, staff and offender safety, security practices, emergency preparedness, critical incident response, and operational readiness across all VADOC facilities. The Corrections Security Manager Senior works closely with Regional Administrators, Wardens, and senior institutional leaders to assess operations and security conditions, identify risks, and support responses to complex operational matters. The position provides strategic recommendations and operational guidance on security staffing, emergency response, offender management, and overall institutional performance. It also supports the consistent implementation of agency policies, security standards, and strategic priorities, while fostering accountability, professional conduct, operational excellence, and public safety. This role operates with a high degree of independence and discretion, serving as a key resource on sensitive and high-impact security and operational issues. The position may represent the Deputy Director and VADOC in various reviews, assessments, and special assignments. Extensive statewide travel is required, and the position may be called upon to respond to institutions during significant security events or emergencies.

Requirements

  • Experienced correctional leaders with extensive knowledge of adult correctional operations, institutional security and safety, correctional security practices, offender management, emergency preparedness and response, critical incident management, and executive leadership.
  • Extensive progressively responsible experience in correctional operations, institutional management, security operations, or a closely related public safety environment, including significant senior-level or executive leadership experience within a complex correctional or public safety organization.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of correctional operations, institutional security practices, effective supervision strategies, offender management, emergency preparedness, critical incident response, and treatment modalities that support public safety outcomes, including the application of evidence-based practices to drive measurable results.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess institutional security and operational conditions; identify emerging threats, vulnerabilities, and risks; interpret and communicate Department policies and security standards; promote accountability and professional conduct; and provide clear direction and guidance to institutional leadership.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with executive leadership, Regional Administrators, Wardens, security and field operations, law enforcement and public safety partners, and other external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion in high-risk, sensitive, and rapidly evolving situations and provide effective leadership.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced knowledge in criminal justice, corrections, public administration, public safety administration, organizational leadership, business administration, or a related field.
  • Experience equivalent to serving in a senior institutional leadership role, such as Warden, Deputy Warden, Regional Director, or comparable executive-level position.

Responsibilities

  • Providing senior-level operational leadership and strategic support to the Deputy Director, Institutions, on complex institutional security and operational matters.
  • Assessing institutional security, safety, operational readiness, and emerging risks; provide recommendations and support corrective actions.
  • Collaborating with Regional Administrators, Wardens, and institutional leadership to strengthen security practices, accountability, consistency, and operational performance.
  • Supporting critical incident response, emergency operations, continuity of operations, and significant security or operational events.
  • Promoting effective implementation of agency security policies, operational standards, strategic initiatives, and public safety priorities.
  • Analyzing complex operational issues and provide executive-level recommendations, guidance, and decision support.
  • Supporting security staffing, offender management, emergency preparedness, and institutional operational effectiveness.
  • Providing leadership, mentorship, and professional guidance to institutional and senior-level staff as assigned.
  • Representing the Deputy Director and VADOC in meetings, security reviews, operational assessments, special projects, and other assignments.
  • Traveling extensively statewide and respond to institutions as required during critical incidents, emergencies, and significant operational or security events.
