About The Position

Incumbents attend, participate, and successfully complete the POST-certified Corrections Recruit Training Academy prior to being commissioned as a Corrections Officer for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. This role requires maintaining physical fitness, obeying laws, successfully completing academy training, wearing a uniform, purchasing required equipment and a vest upon graduation, maintaining firearms qualifications, participating in random drug screening, and maintaining a valid Nevada driver license. Upon academy graduation, officers must work any hours, days, or shifts, including holidays and weekends, and be subject to call-back or overtime requirements. They must also qualify under the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) to work in a detention facility and comply with specific tuberculosis testing requirements. Officers will wear a body camera and vest, study learning materials on off-duty time, comply with department rules and regulations, adhere to the 'ICARE' values, stay current on training, and maintain vehicle registration. A thorough background investigation, including a polygraph, drug test, medical exam, hearing test, and psychological testing, is required. Successful candidates must also pass a Post-background NV POST Physical Fitness Exam and a Pre-Academy NV POST Physical Fitness Exam. The Corrections Recruit Academy is a 20-week program followed by a 10-week field training program. Candidates must be prepared for the rigorous physical and mental demands of the academy.

Requirements

Possession of a High School Diploma, High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED) or General Education Diploma (GED).
Possession of an appropriate, valid Nevada driver license at the time of hire.
Must be 20 years and 6 months of age by the date of the first exam.
Must be a Citizen of the United States by the date of the first exam.
Must not be prohibited from possessing a firearm pursuant to any law, including NRS 202.360 or 18 U.S. Code § 921-922.
Must meet all minimum standards for appointment to perform duties of a peace officer under NAC 289.110.
Successfully complete the Corrections Recruit academy training.
Successfully complete the CO Recruit Academy, including firearms qualification and maintaining such qualification throughout corrections career.
Successfully complete the background investigation, which includes a polygraph, drug test, medical exam, standard hearing test and psychological testing.
Successfully complete the Post-background NV POST Physical Fitness Exam for all candidates waiting longer than six months to start an academy.
Successfully complete the Pre-Academy NV POST Physical Fitness Exam.
Successfully complete the medical exam.
Maintain physical fitness necessary to carry out job duties.
Vision sufficient to read the computer screen, as well as fine print in documents.
Hearing sufficient to hear, discriminate, localize, and respond accordingly to a variety of speech and environmental sounds in a variety of situations, including face-to-face communications, telephone conversations, or radio communications, in accordance with Department standards.
Dexterity and mobility sufficient to perform the following: operate standard jail and office equipment; operate motorized vehicles; climb stairs; sprint from one location to another during code response and run for an extended period of time.
Agility sufficient to twist, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach forward, jump, and reach overhead.
Strength sufficient to subdue and restrain persons and drag, lift, or carry persons or objects.
Endurance sufficient to perform the following: sit at personal computer terminals or in a vehicle for extended periods of time; stand and move around while working indoors or outdoors; wear a mask or other protection equipment for extended periods of time.
Alertness sufficient to be aware of surroundings at all times.

Responsibilities

Attend, participate, and successfully complete the POST-certified Corrections Recruit Training Academy.
Maintain physical fitness to meet all required physical standards throughout the academy.
Obey the laws of the State of Nevada, the County of Clark, and the City of Las Vegas.
Wear a uniform and maintain a neat and clean appearance.
Purchase their own equipment required for this position.
Purchase a vest upon graduation for future use as a weapons carrier.
Meet and maintain qualifications on firearms and other weapons.
Participate in the Department's random drug screening process.
Maintain a valid Nevada driver license.
Work any hours, days, or shifts, including holidays and weekends, as assigned and be subject to call-back or overtime requirements, if necessary, for effective operations of a 24/7 facility.
Qualify under Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) to work in a detention facility.
Comply with tuberculosis testing/screening requirements.
Wear a body camera and vest, and other safety equipment.
Study the learning materials on off-duty time.
Comply with the Department's rules and regulations.
Adhere to the Department's values represented by the "ICARE" acronym.
Stay current on their training.
Obtain/maintain a Nevada driver license, and register/maintain registration of personal vehicle with the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles and Public Safety (DMV).
Undergo a background investigation, which will include a polygraph, drug test, medical exam, standard hearing test and psychological testing.
Maintain physical fitness necessary to carry out job duties.
Participate in the LVMPD Mental Wellness Program.
Accept the requirements of the specific area of assignment.
Successfully complete the CO Recruit Academy, including firearms qualification and maintaining such qualification throughout corrections career.
