Incumbents attend, participate, and successfully complete the POST-certified Corrections Recruit Training Academy prior to being commissioned as a Corrections Officer for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. This role requires maintaining physical fitness, obeying laws, successfully completing academy training, wearing a uniform, purchasing required equipment and a vest upon graduation, maintaining firearms qualifications, participating in random drug screening, and maintaining a valid Nevada driver license. Upon academy graduation, officers must work any hours, days, or shifts, including holidays and weekends, and be subject to call-back or overtime requirements. They must also qualify under the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) to work in a detention facility and comply with specific tuberculosis testing requirements. Officers will wear a body camera and vest, study learning materials on off-duty time, comply with department rules and regulations, adhere to the 'ICARE' values, stay current on training, and maintain vehicle registration. A thorough background investigation, including a polygraph, drug test, medical exam, hearing test, and psychological testing, is required. Successful candidates must also pass a Post-background NV POST Physical Fitness Exam and a Pre-Academy NV POST Physical Fitness Exam. The Corrections Recruit Academy is a 20-week program followed by a 10-week field training program. Candidates must be prepared for the rigorous physical and mental demands of the academy.
