Incumbents attend, participate, and successfully complete the POST-certified Corrections Recruit Training Academy prior to being commissioned as a Corrections Officer for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. This role requires maintaining physical fitness, obeying laws, successfully completing academy training, wearing a uniform, purchasing required equipment and a vest, meeting firearms qualifications, participating in random drug screening, maintaining a valid driver's license, working any hours/days/shifts including holidays and weekends, qualifying under the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA), complying with tuberculosis testing requirements, wearing a body camera and vest, studying learning materials on off-duty time, complying with department rules and regulations, adhering to the department's values represented by the "ICARE" acronym, staying current on training, and maintaining vehicle registration. The position also involves undergoing a background investigation, including a polygraph, drug test, medical exam, hearing test, and psychological testing. Successful candidates must also pass a Post-background NV POST Physical Fitness Exam and a Pre-Academy NV POST Physical Fitness Exam. Upon graduation from the academy, candidates will be assigned to the Corrections Field Training Program (CFTEP) for 10 weeks. The academy is rigorous both physically and academically, equivalent to a college classroom.
