About The Position

Incumbents attend, participate, and successfully complete the POST-certified Police Recruit Training Academy prior to being commissioned as a Police Officer for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. This role requires maintaining physical fitness, obeying laws, successfully completing academy training, wearing a uniform, purchasing required equipment and a vest upon graduation, meeting firearm qualifications, participating in random drug screening, maintaining a valid driver's license, and working any hours, days, or shifts, including holidays and weekends, as assigned. Additionally, employees may be subject to call-back or overtime requirements. They will wear body cameras, vests, and other safety equipment, study learning materials on off-duty time, comply with department rules and regulations, adhere to the department's values represented by the "ICARE" acronym, stay current on training, and maintain vehicle registration. A thorough background investigation, including polygraph, drug test, medical exam, hearing test, and psychological testing, is required. Physical and mental fitness are essential for academy completion, including firearm proficiency, defensive tactics, and maintaining vision and hearing standards. Dexterity, mobility, agility, strength, endurance, and alertness are also crucial for performing job duties.

Requirements

  • Possession of a High School Diploma, High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED) or General Education Diploma (GED).
  • Possession of an appropriate, valid Nevada driver license at the time of hire.
  • Must be 20 years and 6 months of age by the date of the first exam.
  • Must be a Citizen of the United States by the date of the first exam.
  • Must not be prohibited from possessing a firearm pursuant to any law, including NRS 202.360 or 18 U.S. Code § 921-922.
  • Must meet all minimum standards for appointment to perform duties of a peace officer under NAC 289.110.
  • Maintain physical fitness to meet all required physical standards for Police Recruit throughout the duration of the academy.
  • Obey the laws of the State of Nevada, the County of Clark, and the City of Las Vegas.
  • Successfully complete Police Recruit academy training.
  • Wear a uniform and maintain a neat and clean appearance.
  • Purchase their own equipment required for this position.
  • Purchase a vest upon graduation from academy.
  • Meet and maintain qualifications on firearms and other weapons.
  • Participate in the Department's random drug screening process.
  • Maintain a valid Nevada driver license.
  • Upon academy graduation, work any hours, days, or shifts, including holidays and weekends, as assigned and be subject to call-back or overtime requirements, if necessary, for effective operations of a 24/7 facility.
  • Wear a body camera and vest, and other safety equipment.
  • Work any hours, days, or shifts, including holidays and weekends.
  • Study the learning materials on off-duty time.
  • Comply with the Department's rules and regulations.
  • Adhere to the Department's values represented by the "ICARE" acronym.
  • Stay current on their training.
  • Obtain/maintain a Nevada driver license, and register/maintain registration of personal vehicle with the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles and Public Safety (DMV).
  • Undergo a background investigation, which will include a polygraph, drug test, medical exam, standard hearing test and psychological testing.
  • Maintain physical fitness necessary to carry out job duties.
  • Participate in the LVMPD Mental Wellness Program.
  • Accept the requirements of the specific area of assignment.
  • While on duty, and/or representing the Department, uniformed or otherwise, all Department employees will be neat and clean in their appearance in public.
  • Employees are prohibited from attaching, affixing, or displaying objects, articles or jewelry on or through the nose, tongue, eyebrow or other exposed body part, except the ears for females, while on duty.
  • Employees are prohibited from stretching or "gauging" their earlobes.
  • All jewelry implants will not be exposed or visible while on duty.
  • Tattoos or branding will not be exposed or visible while on duty and/or representing the Department. Such markings must be covered by clothing.
  • Markings that cannot be covered by clothing will be covered using neutral-toned bandages or patches except for hands, neck, head, or face tattoos.
  • Makeup is not permissible to cover a tattoo.
  • Tattoos or branding anywhere on the body that promote racism/discrimination, indecency, extremist or supremacist philosophies, lawlessness, violence, or contain sexually explicit material are prohibited.
  • All physical and mental conditions sufficient to meet all standards required for successful completion of the entire Police Recruit academy training, including but not limited to shooting a Department-approved firearm; deploying other Department-approved weapons; maintaining Department-approved firearms qualification; and engaging in defensive tactics.
  • Vision sufficient to read the computer screen, as well as fine print in documents.
  • Hearing sufficient to hear, discriminate, localize, and respond accordingly to a variety of speech and environmental sounds in a variety of situations, including face-to-face communications, telephone conversations, or radio communications, in accordance with Department standards.
  • Dexterity and mobility sufficient to perform the following: operate standard police and office equipment; operate motorized vehicles; climb stairs; sprint from one location to another during code response and run for an extended period of time.
  • Agility sufficient to twist, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach forward, jump, and reach overhead.
  • Strength sufficient to subdue and restrain persons and drag, lift, or carry persons or objects.
  • Endurance sufficient to perform the following: sit at personal computer terminals or in a vehicle for extended periods of time; stand and move around while working indoors or outdoors; wear a mask or other protection equipment for extended periods of time.
  • Alertness sufficient to be aware of surroundings at all times.
  • Successfully complete the above selection process.
  • Successfully complete the Post-background NV POST Physical Fitness Exam for all candidates waiting longer than six months to start an academy.
  • Successfully complete the Pre-Academy NV POST Physical Fitness Exam.
  • Successfully pass the Medical Exam.
  • Successfully complete the background investigation, which takes approximately 90 to 120 days to complete.
  • Meet the LVMPD Hiring Standards.

Nice To Haves
