About The Position

Under supervision, the Correctional Officer performs work involving the care and custody of inmates in the County detention facility in accordance with prescribed regulations, DOC standards, ordinance and law. Further, this position performs other duties as required by their immediate supervisors above.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • All correctional officers will be required to attend and successfully complete a 160-hour Jail Training School and all other schooling and training required.

Nice To Haves

  • Three years of post high school work experience is preferred, most appropriately in a civil or military detention facility.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains safety and security throughout the entire facility.
  • Supervises and care for inmates of the County Jail within established policies and procedures.
  • Assist and “set-up” video court process.
  • Maintain certification and attend and/or participate in all training activities.
  • Maintains discipline by enforcing the rules and regulations pertaining to the facility and may employ a reasonable amount of force to quell disturbances and maintain discipline.
  • Receives and books inmates, utilizing the most current technological techniques that Shawano County provides, and assigns and escorts inmates to cells, dormitories or POD areas.
  • Inventories property, money and controls the introduction of contraband to the facilities of incoming inmates.
  • Assists the inmate in posting bond or bail.
  • Delivers inmate canteen and mail.
  • Inspects and searches inmates, issue uniforms, bedding and other supplies; assists in orientation of the inmate population; and assists in the operation of food service.
  • Inspects and searches inmates and their living area for cleanliness, contraband and order (shakedown).
  • May transport and oversee inmates to activities, work assignments, court and health care facilities.
  • Assigns, supervises, monitors and inspects the work of inmate workers engaged in maintaining the cleanliness of the facility or in the preparation of meals.
  • Inspects and searches inmates and their living area for cleanliness, contraband and order (shakedown).
  • May transport and oversee inmates to activities, work assignments, court and health care facilities.
  • Assigns, supervises, monitors and inspects the work of inmate workers engaged in maintaining the cleanliness of the facility or in the preparation of meals.
  • Assists in delivery and retrieval of inmate meals and laundry.
  • Performs general housekeeping and maintenance duties in the facility as needed and may assist in the operation of laundry equipment.
  • Completes violation reports of jail rules.
  • Provides a positive "habilitative" influence to inmates within guidelines established by the Huber Lieutenant.
  • Performs Urinalysis testing on inmate population.
  • Collects DNA samples from appropriate inmate population.
  • Performs PBT and Intoxilyzer testing on inmate and prisoner population.
  • Prepares inmates for work details, in and out of the facility, which includes monitoring of inmates on Electronic Home Detention. Further, anticipates and prepares for their anticipated return.
  • Observes the inmate population and makes periodic reports regarding their attitude and behavior. Also recognizes various types of inmate behavior and takes appropriate action to supervise this troubled population (i.e. suicide ideation, etc.)
  • Prepares, presents and maintains written and oral reports and records (documentation) as required.
  • Distributes and records prescribed and PRN medications to the inmate population and may be required to administer basic first aid or CPR or both.
  • Consults and alerts contracted medical professionals regarding perceived inmate medical and mental health needs.
  • Creates the first impression of all visitors to the Shawano County Jail/WRC Facilities, regardless of means (i.e. telephone, professional visitor, public visitation, etc.).
