About The Position

The Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) is seeking Corrections Officers for various facilities within its Northern Region. These are entry-level positions where employees oversee and participate in the custody, security, and treatment of prisoners in correctional facilities. Military veterans are strongly encouraged to apply. Upon hire, employees must successfully complete an 8-week DOC Officer Recruit Training program, followed by two months of on-the-job training. Successful completion of initial training, annual training, and continuing certification are required to remain employed. These positions are test-designated and subject to drug and alcohol testing.

Requirements

  • Completion of 15 semester (23 term) college credits in any field.
  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age at time of employment.
  • Must pass a post-job-offer medical exam, drug screen, and physical fitness test.
  • Must finish an approved eight-week corrections officer training program, followed by eight weeks of on-the-job training.
  • Must meet ethical standards and report any possible conflict of interest.

Nice To Haves

  • Military Veterans are encouraged to apply.
  • Proof of two years' experience as a Correctional Officer in a State or Federal Penitentiary, submitted from the Human Resources Department indicating good standing.
  • DD-214-Member 4 Copy (active duty), NGB-22-Individual Copy 2 (National Guard), and/or discharge certificate (all other military reserve duty) for each tour of service.
  • Verification from the military branch where you are currently serving.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and participate in the custody, security, and treatment of prisoners in correctional facilities.
  • Learn and develop interpersonal skills required to perform a range of corrections officer assignments.
  • Successfully complete the DOC Officer Recruit Training program.
  • Successfully complete on-the-job training.
  • Participate in annual training and maintain continuing certification as a Corrections Officer.
