About The Position

Corrections officers support the public safety mission by maintaining the safety and security of the public, staff, and inmates. They ensure safe custody and control and compliance with policies and procedures, using evidence-based practices, effective communication strategies, and role modeling as part of collaborative multidisciplinary teams addressing inmate needs. Officers provide security for adult inmates at the institution and during transport, supervise inmates’ daily activities, and observe and record their behavior and movement to ensure safe and secure confinement. The position is at Dillwyn Correctional Center. A $3,000 sign-on bonus is available to eligible new hires.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Valid driver’s license.
Ability to read and comprehend workplace policies and procedures and prepare workplace reports and documentation.
Ability to lawfully possess a firearm in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Ability to successfully complete pre-employment requirements, including medical screening, background check, and drug testing, including screening for marijuana use.

Nice To Haves

Stable employment history.
Military or related criminal justice experience.
Applicants at least 21 years old are preferred; a waiver may be provided by the Unit Head for individuals aged 18–20.
Bilingual and multilingual applicants are encouraged to apply.
