About The Position

This is a promotional opportunity for current LA Department of Corrections employees who have permanent status and are ready to advance in their career. As Assistant to the Unit Manager at Raymond Laborde Correctional Center (RLCC), the incumbent will support operations within a Class 2 facility that houses 1,808 adult male offenders ranging from minimum to maximum custody. RLCC’s workforce includes 355 authorized positions, along with numerous contract-funded, unclassified, and WAE security staff who contribute to the institution’s mission. The mission of the Louisiana Department of Corrections is to promote public safety and strengthen communities through fair, professional, and responsive corrections services. Requirements

  • Four years of experience in a correctional, behavioral, or penal institution with responsibility for the security, custody, rehabilitation, or classification of offenders, or in law enforcement or security
  • Possession of a high school diploma or GED; OR One year of experience in any field; OR Six months of law enforcement experience as a POST certified peace officer.
  • One year of this experience must have been in a position equivalent in scope of responsibility or complexity of work performed to a Corrections Captain in State service.
  • An applicant who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or a felony, or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Possession of a current driver's license.

Nice To Haves

  • Applicants must authorize the HR Office of DPS&C-Corrections Services to contact prior employers to check references under the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA), to be considered for employment , by answering ‘YES’ to the PREA question.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for giving appropriate guidance and directions to the Shift Majors who are assigned responsibility for the overall security on their assigned Unit
  • Makes daily inspections of the prison and endures that all security rules, regulations, and procedures are being enforced.
  • Ensures that appropriate security measures are in effect in all areas.
