About The Position

Douglas County Sheriff's Office - Corrections Division Full-time 40 hour per week position. Includes excellent benefit package, including medical/vision/dental/long-term disability/basic life coverage and County-paid PERS retirement after required waiting periods. Onsite (Courthouse complex) childcare available at a discounted employee rate through Roseburg Professional Childcare (Fowler St. location only). Availability is subject to center waitlist. This is a union position represented by Douglas County Law Enforcement Association. In addition to filling current vacancies, a hiring list will be established to fill future Corrections Deputy openings. Openings will be offered to applicants dependent upon all qualifiers and testing. There is no guarantee future opportunities will occur.

Requirements

  • Must be 21 years of age by the time of certification
  • Must be a United States citizen or be one within eighteen (12) months of hire.
  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED certificate of high school equivalency.
  • Must have an acceptable driving record and the ability to obtain a valid driver's license.
  • Applicants for this position must meet the requirements of the County's Driving Policy.
  • Must be free from convictions of crime other than minor traffic violations.
  • Must successfully pass an extensive background investigation.
  • Must pass an extensive post-offer pre-employment physical assessment and psychological evaluation.
  • Must successfully pass a post offer pre-employment drug test.
  • Must be willing to be fingerprinted and have fingerprints filed with the State.
  • Must meet the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training requirements as detailed in Oregon Administrative Rules (OARs) 259­-0080010
  • Must be able to be certified by the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training.
  • Must meet the Minimum Standards for Employment as a Law Enforcement Officer as provided for in Oregon Administrative Rules (OARs) 259-008-0010.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Only those persons who will be able to successfully pass an intensive background investigation need apply.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains security of inmates
  • escorts inmates to court and other facilities
  • books, searches, fingerprints and photographs incoming prisoners
  • maintains logs and records
  • interprets and follows court orders
  • employs both oral instruction and disciplinary procedures necessary to maintain order
  • searches inmates and cell units for contraband articles
  • conducts visual security checks of all inmates on an hourly basis or less
  • answers questions and interprets policy and procedure for law enforcement officials, attorneys, inmates, inmates' families, and the public
  • uses with a high degree of accuracy, a firearm and such non-lethal weaponry as required
  • operates a two-way radio system under normal and stressful conditions
  • Requires regular and consistent attendance.
