About The Position

The Corrections Counselor 1 position with the Department of Corrections (DOC) offers a meaningful way to support positive change at the State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Phoenix. You will play an important part in helping inmates work through challenges, build skills for success, and prepare for life in the community. This role allows you to use strong communication and problem-solving skills to address concerns and encourage positive choices. Become part of a team that is dedicated to meaningful rehabilitation. This role focuses on providing counseling, guidance, and case management to inmates as they adjust to the correctional environment and work toward future goals. The work supports personal growth, provides encouragement, and promotes successful community reintegration.

Requirements

  • Three years and six months as a corrections officer, and 18 college credits in any combination of sociology, counseling, psychology, social work, corrections, criminal justice, or a related field; or A bachelor’s degree including 18 college credits in any combination of sociology, counseling, psychology, social work, corrections, criminal justice, or a related field; or An equivalent combination of experience and training that includes 18 college credits in any combination of sociology, counseling, psychology, social work, corrections, criminal justice, or a related field.
  • Obtain Commonwealth Law Enforcement Assistance Network (CLEAN) and Pennsylvania Justice Network (JNET) certification within two months of employment and maintain certification for the duration of employment in this job.
  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.
  • Meet the PA residency requirement.
  • Be able to perform essential job functions.
  • Pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.

  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct interviews, address adjustment issues, and guide inmates in resolving personal and family concerns
  • Maintain records, prepare reports, and communicate with staff, families, and agencies regarding inmate progress
  • Analyze aptitude and interest tests, compile socio-demographic histories, and determine programming needs based on assessment results
  • Coordinate goals, programming, and activities that support behavioral change and positive adjustment
  • Assist with re-entry planning, secure needed documents, and prepare reports for parole review
