About The Position

The Corrections Captain serves as an Assistant Shift Supervisor at Raymond Laborde Correctional Center (RLCC) in Cottonport, Louisiana. RLCC is an adult male correctional institution with an operational capacity of 1,908 offenders across minimum, medium, and maximum custody levels. The Louisiana Department of Public Safety & Corrections works to promote public safety and strengthen communities through fair, professional, and responsive corrections services.

This is a promotional opportunity for current Louisiana Department of Corrections employees who have permanent status and are ready to advance. The position is a detail for a permanent, classified employee of LA DPS&C – Corrections Services (Adult DOC). An employee selected for detail may be permanently promoted to the position if one becomes available. The facility operates 24 hours a day, and applicants may be required to work shift work.

Requirements

• At least three years of experience in a correctional, behavioral, or penal institution involving responsibility for the security, custody, rehabilitation, or classification of offenders, or in law enforcement or security.
• In addition to the experience requirement, meet one of the following: possess a high school diploma or GED; have one year of experience in any field; or have six months of law enforcement experience as a POST-certified peace officer.
• At least one year of experience in a position equivalent in scope of responsibility or complexity of work to a Corrections Lieutenant in State service.
• Be at least 18 years of age.
• Possess a current driver's license.
• Applicants with specified misdemeanor domestic violence or felony convictions, or pending felony indictments, are disqualified unless relief from the applicable legal disabilities has been granted.
• Applicants found to have engaged in specified forms of sexual abuse or non-consensual or coercive sexual activity are disqualified under PREA.
• Applicants must authorize the DPS&C-Corrections Services HR Office to contact prior employers for PREA reference checks by answering “YES” to the PREA question in the application.
• Any claimed degree, certificate, special license, or DD-214 must be verified by official documentation before hire. Qualifying experience based on college credit or hours must be supported by a transcript.

Responsibilities

• Inspect areas under supervision daily to ensure compliance with security policies and practices and that officers are performing their duties properly.
• Investigate unusual occurrences and determine an appropriate course of action.
• Coordinate personnel assignments for the Shift Supervisor to ensure proper coverage for each post.
• Counsel subordinate officers regarding problems they may have.
• Conduct daily inspections of officers.

Benefits

• Special Entrance Rate of $29.60 per hour.
• Premium pay of $0.50 to $1.00 per hour worked, based on years of service with DOC, in addition to regular pay.
