About The Position

The Washington State Department of Corrections is seeking highly motivated and talented individuals for the positions of Correctional Officer 1 and/or 2, at the Washington Corrections Center for Women (WCCW) Gig Harbor, WA. WCCW is Washington’s only multi-custody correctional facility for adult women and has a fundamental responsibility to protect the public by separating individuals from the community. WCCW enhances public safety by providing individuals with programs that are proven to reduce the likelihood of committing new crimes and promote self-efficacy after release from confinement. Such programs include education, job skills training, chemical dependency and mental health treatment. The on call/intermittent positions have no minimum hour guarantee. Successful candidates for this recruitment would attend the earliest Training Academy available. The Washington legislature has established a comprehensive system of corrections for convicted law violators within the state of Washington to accomplish a primary objective of ensuring public safety. The system is designed and managed to provide the maximum feasible safety for the persons and property of the general public, the staff, and the inmates (RCW 72.09.010). The Department of Corrections (DOC) has 11 prison facilities with custody levels ranging from minimum to maximum security.

Requirements

  • Must meet the Bona Fide Occupational Qualification (BFOQ) requirement.
  • Graduation from high school or GED.
  • Valid Driver's license.
  • The legal (Constitutional) right to carry a firearm.
  • One year of experience as a Department of Corrections (DOC) Corrections and Custody Officer, which includes successful completion of the CORE (Academy) and the Correctional Officer Field Training Program.
  • One year of experience as a Correctional Officer in adult or juvenile corrections where security functions equivalent to a DOC Corrections and Security Officer 2 were performed.

Responsibilities

  • Provide safety and security in an adult correctional facility.
  • Assist in controlling, directing, and monitoring the activities and movement of incarcerated individuals.
  • Maintain security of the institution and control movement into, out of, and within the institution in accordance with established department methods and procedures.
  • Be a positive role model and work with incarcerated individuals to help them become productive members of society.
  • Use interpersonal skills and good communication skills to correct and counteract criminal thinking while maintaining safe confinement environments for individuals to pursue successful re-entry into communities.
  • Overtime is an essential function of this position.
