About The Position

The Washington State Department of Corrections is seeking highly motivated and talented individuals for the positions of Correctional Officer 1 and/or 2, at the Airway Heights Correctional Center (AHCC). AHCC is a 2000 bed male facility, located approximately 10 miles west of Spokane. The prison consists of a main facility that houses medium- and long-term minimum-custody incarcerated individuals. A separate perimeter adjacent to the main facility accommodates a minimum-security unit for incarcerated individuals with minimum-custody or lower. It has six living units in the Main facility, along with Segregation and two living units at the Minimum-Security Unit (MSU). AHCC currently houses Security Threat Group (STG) members that have been screened for “Safe Harbor” at both the Main and Minimum-Security facilities. K-Unit supports the senior living program established to promote wellness, improve the well-being of the incarcerated population, reduce medical costs and improve functioning upon release. Correctional Industries (CI) is a unique blend of business and government using private industry tools and techniques to operate work training programs in prisons and provide individuals to learn marketable job skills. CI employs approximately 575 incarcerated workers at AHCC. Job opportunities include Commissary, Food Manufacturing, Food Service, Optical, Textiles/Custom Products, Laundry and Warehouse. Work Programs: Positions in barber, classroom assistant, library clerk, custodial services, dog handler, game box manager, ground keeper and horticulture. In partnership with the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) MSU incarcerated workers perform work on 220,000 acres of state trust lands, state parks and fire crews in the Northeast Region. MSU Community Crews work at other state agencies performing maintenance related tasks, landscaping and headstone realignment tasks at the State Veterans Cemetery. The work of a Correctional Officer, and the required training, can be physically demanding at times. Prior to a new hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform in the position. Employees may work directly with or in close proximity to incarcerated individuals in a potentially hazardous setting. We are committed to maintaining a drug and alcohol-free work environment, and our employees are expected to comply with all state and federal laws. A pre-employment drug test will be administered as part of the selection process, and applicants who test positive for any controlled substances, will be disqualified from consideration. The successful candidate will be required to provide valid proof of a baseline TB skin test within 60 days from the date of hire. When positive tests result, further information, testing and treatment may also be required. Employment is not contingent upon test results. This position is included in a union shop. Salary is based on experience and is determined at the time a final offer of employment is made. The salary range listed in the job posting includes steps A-M. Step M is a longevity step and is typically gained six years after being assigned to step L in your permanent salary range. Requires respirator medical evaluation questionnaire, fit testing, training, and use of respiratory protection as required by the WA Industrial Safety & Act standards. Requirements

Graduation from high school or GED
Valid Driver's license
The legal (Constitutional) right to carry a firearm
One year of experience as a Department of Corrections (DOC) Corrections and Custody Officer, which includes successful completion of the CORE (Academy) and the Correctional Officer Field Training Program (to qualify at CO2 level).
One year of experience as a Correctional Officer in adult or juvenile corrections where security functions equivalent to a DOC Corrections and Security Officer 2 were performed (to qualify at CO2 level).
Pre-employment process includes drug testing and psychological evaluation.
Must provide valid proof of a baseline TB skin test within 60 days from the date of hire.
Must be able to provide proof of identity and eligibility to work in the United States consistent with the requirements of the federal employment eligibility verification form I-9.

Responsibilities

Provide safety and security in an adult correctional facility.
Assist in controlling, directing, and monitoring the activities and movement of incarcerated individuals.
Maintain security of the institution and control movement into, out of, and within the institution in accordance with established department methods and procedures.
Serve as a positive role model and work with incarcerated individuals to help them become productive members of society.
Use interpersonal skills and good communication skills to correct and counteract criminal thinking while maintaining safe confinement environments for individuals to pursue successful re-entry into communities.
Successfully complete Correctional Worker Core (CWC), a six-week academy for all correctional workers employed in DOC prison facilities.
Engage in on-the-job training throughout employment.
