About The Position

The Wyoming Department of Corrections is committed to public safety and high correctional standards, as well as a safe, supportive working environment for our employees. The Wyoming State Penitentiary is seeking a Correctional Unit Manager to oversee the daily operations of assigned inmate housing units. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading unit operations and facilitating essential coordination between internal staff, external departments, and contracted personnel. This position ensures that facility operations strictly adhere to WDOC policy and procedure while adequately addressing inmate needs. Additionally, the Unit Manager provides direct leadership and supervision to unit personnel, including an Administrative Assistant, a Case Team Leader, and a team of Caseworkers.

Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree (typically in Criminal Justice)
• 1-2 years progressive work experience (typically in Correctional Programs) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Correctional Program Supervisor OR 4-6 years progressive work experience (typically in Correctional Programs) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Correctional Program Supervisor
• Knowledge of unit management concepts, human relations, institutional health standards, and inmate behavior.

Responsibilities

• Responsible for ensuring a safe and enjoyable workplace, including participation in initiatives designed to promote a positive work environment.
• Act as Officer in Charge as required.
• Conduct budgetary reviews.
• Provide direct assistance to the Warden, Deputy Warden, and Housing Manager for all facility operations, whether security or programming.
• Coordinate and collaborate with other Federal, State, and local agencies, community boards, and service providers.
• Develop and interpret unit policies, procedures, practices, and operations.
• Review and revise operational standards for the unit to coincide with best practices and state and federal requirements
• Monitor program accountability and compliance through site checks, audits, and regular contact with DOC facilities.
• Develop and manage program outcomes, ensuring the collection of relevant data to confirm service delivery.
• Act as project manager for the program and liaison between WDOC and contract providers.
• Provide staff training and supervision and maintain constant monitoring of all unit and program(s) functions.
• Provide professional program oversight to ensure the success of the Corrections program.
• Review reports and monitor facility recommendations.
• Supervise and counsel subordinate staff to accomplish unit and program goals/objectives.
• Conduct formal performance appraisals.
• Assist in the hiring process to sustain adequate staff to meet the needs of the institution or program.
• Develop inmate or offender programming and collaborate with unit staff regarding classification, programs, job assignments, program reviews, and the handling of minor and general disciplinary reports and grievances.
• Lead unit, multi-disciplinary team that ensures unit security and provides for inmate or offender activities and movement.
• Participate as a member of the executive staff.
• Attend meetings and planning sessions; perform special assignments as directed.
