About The Position

Reporting to the Correctional Programs Director, this position is responsible for providing and supervising programs for the rehabilitation of offenders at a medium-custody correctional facility. The primary programs areas are offender classification; correctional programs including educational/vocational, volunteer programs, religion, and recreation, and correctional counseling.

Requirements

  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Bachelor’s degree in a human services or criminal justice field from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in corrections or related work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

Nice To Haves

  • Documented knowledge of internal and/or external services available to offenders.
  • Documented 12 months (1 year) of correctional program experience.
  • Documented knowledge of case management practices, or supportive counseling techniques and/or interviewing techniques for intake assessments.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate effectively with other staff, offenders, and the general public whether verbally and/or written.
  • Defend oneself against attack by violent offenders and working under stressful conditions caused by direct contact with incarcerated offenders who can become physically violent and verbally abusive.
  • Conduct continuous visual and audio surveillance of assigned work area.
  • Demonstrate and instruct offenders in the proper safe use of tools, equipment, and supplies.
  • Review, analyze, and evaluate various documents and behavioral data gathered from interviews, written documentation, and personal observation.
  • Perform crisis interventions and routine counseling to include suicide prevention.
  • Train, observe, evaluate, and supervise subordinate staff regarding their duties and responsibilities.
  • Account for supplies and equipment, developing, implementing, and managing Correctional Programs.
