About The Position

The Iowa Correctional Institution for Women is a multi-faceted facility that serves as the sole female facility and female reception center for the Iowa Department of Corrections. This role involves supervising employees during assigned shifts, ensuring the security and orderly operations of the institution, managing staff development, and handling administrative duties. The position requires thorough documentation and investigation of staff matters.

Requirements

  • Three years of full-time work experience in correctional or law enforcement officer work, one year of which must have been as a correctional officer in a juvenile or adult community/ institutional corrections or jail security program.
  • One year of full-time work experience in correctional or law enforcement officer work, and a combination of a total of two years of education and full-time experience, where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in penology, police science, psychology, sociology, or social work equals one year of full-time experience.
  • Eighteen months of full-time work experience as a counselor of offenders in a community/ institutional corrections or jail security program.
  • A combination of a total of eighteen months of education and full-time experience, where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in penology, police science, psychology, sociology, or social work equals one year of full-time experience.
  • Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes six months of full-time work as a Senior Correctional Officer.
  • Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes one year of full-time work as a Correctional Counselor or State Industries Technician.
  • Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes two-and-a-half years of full time work as a Correctional Officer or Correctional Food Service Coordinator.
  • Ability to pass a background investigation.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise employees during assigned shifts.
  • Visit all staffed areas and living/working units for incarcerated individuals once per shift, documenting rounds using a PDA.
  • Assign area and personal offender searches.
  • Ensure the overall orderly operations of the institution.
  • Identify training and developmental needs for Correctional Officers (COs), providing necessary coaching to improve job performance.
  • Assist with training sessions and orientation as designated.
  • Maintain, approve, and deny CO work time and leave requests within the WorkDay and Kronos systems.
  • Complete CO work schedules.
  • Develop and write timely performance evaluations for assigned COs.
  • Complete staff investigations thoroughly and on time.
  • Maintain all pertinent information in the Supervisor daily log and make all necessary entries and changes in the ICON system.
