About The Position

The Oregon Department of Corrections is seeking dedicated and experienced candidates for the position of Correctional Sergeant at the Snake River Correctional Institution in Ontario, Oregon. This recruitment is for multiple permanent and work-out-of-class (WOC) positions. WOC positions are anticipated to last 12 months, with potential for extension or reduction based on business needs. These positions are open to current regular status employees of the Oregon Department of Corrections, Oregon Corrections Enterprises, or Oregon Board of Parole, Probation, and Post-Prison Supervision. Applicants for WOC opportunities must provide written approval from their current supervisor. As a Correctional Sergeant, you will be a senior security staff member responsible for the custody, control, supervision, and daily care of AICs, upholding the department's mission. You will act as a lead worker, ensuring facility operations are smooth, safe, and efficient. Responsibilities include supervising AICs during movement, monitoring high-security areas, and conducting security operations such as transports and searches. You will also contribute to staff development, assisting in training and potentially mentoring subordinate staff as a Field Training Officer (FTO), modeling professionalism, accountability, and behaviors that support rehabilitation.

Requirements

  • Two (2) years of experience in a correctional security setting where primary duties were the care and custody of AICs.
  • Ability to obtain, within two weeks, an Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) Correctional Certificate OR a Correctional Certificate from another government agency.
  • Possess a High School Diploma or GED certificate.
  • Be 21 years of age or older.
  • United States Citizen.
  • Ability to obtain a valid Oregon motor vehicle operator's license.
  • Pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility.
  • Must not have engaged in, been convicted of, or been civilly or administratively adjudicated for engaging in sexual abuse in confinement settings (PREA requirement for those with direct resident contact).
