About The Position

This position is located at Alexander Correctional Institution in Taylorsville, North Carolina. Alexander Correctional is a closed custody male facility with approximately 1,000 beds. The role involves first-line supervision of Correctional Officer IIIs in a close-custody institution with restrictive and controlled housing. The position reports directly to a Correctional Lieutenant III and/or the Correctional Housing Unit Manager.

Requirements

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of experience as a Correctional Officer, or two years of experience as a Correctional Officer III; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.
Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
Pass a criminal background check
Produce a negative drug screening result
Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
Possess a valid driver’s license

Responsibilities

Assigning lower-level custody staff to a particular area or post.
Evaluating and overseeing officer activities and performance and ensuring that the custody, security, and welfare of offenders is maintained.
Coordinating work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implementing standard operational procedures (SOPs) and ensuring rules and regulations are followed according to policy.
Managing the facility on occasion of being the highest-ranking custody staff on the premises or the Officer-in-Charge (OIC).
Ensuring that staff are fully trained and that proper conduct, actions, and procedures are being followed.
Maintaining facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintenance, health, and safety of offenders.
Communicating effectively instructions/directions during drills, searches, and in emergencies situations.
Responding to emergency situations such as; distress codes, escapes, and transportation of offenders.
Conducting and/or supervising searches of offenders, offender living areas and work areas for contraband.
Investigating and taking action when appropriate regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints.
Preparing, reviewing reports and completing performance evaluations on subordinate staff.
