About The Position

Reporting to a Correctional Housing Unit Manager I, this position is responsible for first line supervision of Correctional Officer II’s at a medium custody male correctional facility. This position’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. Assigning lower level custody staff to a particular area/post and evaluating and overseeing officer activities and performance and ensuring that the custody, security, and welfare of offenders is maintained. 2. Coordinating work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implementing operational procedures and ensuring rules and regulations are followed according to policy. 3. Managing the facility on occasion of being the highest-ranking custody staff on the premises or the Officer-In-Charge (OIC). 4. Ensuring the staff are fully trained and that proper conduct, actions, and procedures are being followed. 5. Maintaining facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintenance, health, and safety of offenders. 6. Communicating effective instruction/direction during drills, searches, and in emergencies situations. 7. Responding to emergency situations such as: distress codes, escapes, and transportation of offenders. 8. Conducting and/or supervising searches of offenders, offender living areas and work areas for contraband. 9. Investigating and taking action when appropriate regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints. 10. Preparing, reviewing reports and completing performance evaluations on subordinate staff.

Requirements

  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND two years six months of experience as a Correctional Officer, OR two years of experience as Correctional Officer II; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.
  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
