About The Position

The Correctional Sergeant III position is located at Bertie Correctional Institution in Windsor, North Carolina, which houses approximately 1504 medium or close custody male offenders. Work in this class involves first-line supervision to Correctional Officer III's in close custody institutions with restrictive and controlled housing.

Requirements

  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of experience as a Correctional Officer, or two years of experience as a Correctional Officer III; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.
  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license

Responsibilities

  • Assigns lower-level custody staff to a particular area or post.
  • Oversees officer activities and performance to ensure the custody, security, and welfare of inmates is maintained.
  • Arranges work schedules to ensure shift coverage.
  • Implements operational procedures and ensures rules and regulations are followed according to policy.
  • Ensures staff is fully trained and that proper conduct, actions, and procedures are followed.
  • Maintains facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintenance and health and safety of inmates.
  • Gives direction during drills, searches, and in emergencies.
  • May lead staff in carrying out tactical assignment(s).
  • Responds to emergency situations, searches for escaped offenders, and transports offenders.
  • Conducts and/or supervises searches of offenders, their living quarters, and work areas for contraband.
  • Investigates and takes action, where appropriate, regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints.
  • Prepares and reviews a variety of reports.
  • Completes annual performance evaluations and assists in assessing, evaluating, and implementing employee discipline.
  • Conducts staff briefing sessions.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
