About The Position

The Correctional Sergeant II position is located at Maury Correctional Institution in Hookerton, which houses approximately 1504 medium or close custody male offenders. Work in this class involves first-line supervision to Correctional Officer II's in close-custody institutions with restrictive and controlled housing. Position assigns lower-level custody staff to a particular area or post.

Requirements

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years six months of experience as a Correctional Officer, or two years of experience as Correctional Officer II; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.
Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
Pass a criminal background check
Produce a negative drug screening result
Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
Possess a valid driver’s license

Responsibilities

Oversee officer activities and performance and ensure that the custody, security and welfare of inmates is maintained.
Arrange work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implement operational procedures and ensure rules and regulations are followed according to policy.
Ensure that staff is fully trained and that proper conduct, actions and procedures are followed.
Maintain facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintenance and health and safety of inmates.
Give direction during drills, searches, and in emergencies.
May lead staff in carrying out tactical assignment(s).
Respond to emergency situations, searches for escaped offenders, and transports offenders.
Conduct and/or supervise searches of offenders, their living quarters, and work areas for contraband.
Investigate and take action, where appropriate, regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints.
Prepare and review a variety of reports.
Complete annual performance evaluations and assist in assessing, evaluating, and implementing employee discipline.
Conduct staff briefing sessions.
Perform other related duties as required.
