About The Position
The NC Department of Adult Correction is a large state agency responsible for safeguarding lives and property, and for the care, custody, and supervision of adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons, probation/parole services, Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations, and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. The Correctional Sergeant II position reports to the Correctional Lieutenant II and is responsible for increasing custody and security coverage. This role involves assigning lower-level custody staff, overseeing officer activities and performance, and ensuring the custody, security, and welfare of offenders are maintained. The position also serves as the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) and supervises offenders in restrictive housing.
Requirements
- High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years six months of experience as a Correctional Officer
- Two years of experience as Correctional Officer II
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
- MUST be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
- Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
- Pass a criminal background check
- Produce a negative drug screening result
- Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
- Possess a valid driver’s license

Responsibilities
- Serving as first-line supervisor of Correctional Officer II’s.
- Arranging work schedules to ensure shift coverage.
- Ensuring accurate recording of worktime/leave for subordinate staff.
- Implementing operational procedures and ensuring rules and regulations are followed according to policy.
- Ensuring officers’ equipment is always fully functional and available.
- Serving as the Officer-in-Charge (OIC).
- Supervising offenders in restrictive housing.
