About The Position

The Correctional Sergeant II position is located at Maury Correctional Institution in Hookerton, which houses approximately 1504 medium or close custody male offenders. Work in this class involves first-line supervision to Correctional Officer II's in close-custody institutions with restrictive and controlled housing. Position assign lower level custody staff to a particular area or post. Employees oversee officer activities and performance and ensure that the custody, security and welfare of inmates is maintained. Employees arrange work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implement operational procedures and ensure rules and regulations are followed according to policy. Positions report directly to a Correctional Lieutenant III and/or the Correctional Housing Unit Manager.

Requirements

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years six months of experience as a Correctional Officer, or two years of experience as Correctional Officer II; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
Thorough knowledge of the overall operation of correctional facilities; of applicable policies
Thorough knowledge of disciplinary procedures and techniques appropriate for persons under criminal confinement.
Thorough knowledge of procedures, rules, and regulations associated with the control and management of inmates; and of correctional methods, techniques, practices, and procedures.
Skill in the use and care of firearms.
Ability to supervise and evaluate the work of subordinate custody staff.
Ability to think and act quickly in emergencies in order to determine and implement effective and appropriate courses of action.
Ability to prepare reports.

Responsibilities

Ensures that staff is fully trained and that proper conduct, actions and procedures are followed.
Maintains facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintenance and health and safety of inmates.
Gives direction during drills, searches, and in emergencies.
May lead staff in carrying out tactical assignment(s).
Responds to emergency situations, searches for escaped offenders, and transports offenders.
Conducts and/or supervises searches of offenders, their living quarters, and work areas for contraband.
Investigates and takes action, where appropriate, regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints.
Prepares and reviews a variety of reports.
Completes annual performance evaluations and assists in assessing, evaluating, and implementing employee discipline.
Conducts staff briefing sessions.
Performs other related duties as required.
