About The Position

This position is at Alexander Correctional Institution in Taylorsville, North Carolina. Alexander Correctional is a closed custody male facility with approximately 1,000 beds. The position reports to a Correctional Housing Unit Manager and is responsible for assigning lower-level custody staff, evaluating officer activities and performance, coordinating work schedules, ensuring staff training and conduct, maintaining facility security through inspections, communicating effectively during emergencies, responding to emergency situations, conducting searches for contraband, investigating security issues, and preparing/reviewing reports and performance evaluations.

Requirements

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of experience as a correctional officer; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
Pass a criminal background check
Produce a negative drug screening result
Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
Possess a valid driver’s license

Responsibilities

Assigning lower-level custody staff to a particular area or post.
Evaluating and overseeing officer activities and performance and ensuring that the custody, security, and welfare of offenders is maintained.
Coordinating work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implementing standard operational procedures (SOPs) and ensuring rules and regulations are followed according to policy.
Ensuring that staff are fully trained and that proper conduct, actions, and procedures are being followed.
Maintaining facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintenance, health, and safety of offenders.
Communicating effectively instructions/directions during drills, searches, and in emergencies situations.
Responding to emergency situations such as; distress codes, escapes, and transportation of offenders.
Conducting and/or supervising searches of offenders, offender living areas and work areas for contraband.
Investigating and taking action when appropriate regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints.
Preparing, reviewing reports and completing performance evaluations on subordinate staff.
