About The Position

This position is located at Gaston Correctional Center in Dallas, North Carolina. Gaston Correctional Center is a minimum custody facility housing up to 242 male offenders. The Correctional Sergeant I reports to the Associate Warden and is responsible for supervising subordinate officers in their assigned tasks with male offenders. The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction is a large state agency focused on safeguarding lives and property, and the care, custody, and supervision of adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. The department includes state prisons, probation/parole services, Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations, and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission.

Requirements

  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of experience as a correctional officer; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license

Responsibilities

  • Supervising a shift of employees, conducting shift line-up, making shift schedules, and inspecting all personnel to determine if they are physically and mentally capable of assuming an assigned post.
  • Completing, reviewing, and maintaining time reports, duty rosters, leave schedules, all required custody reports, performance evaluations, and administrative forms.
  • Reviewing all logs, reports, and required documentation from shift rotations.
  • Accounting for persons and funds to ensure that all assigned equipment is operationally ready.
  • Handling activities relating to the custody and welfare of offenders.
  • Conducting inspections of offender living areas, medical and kitchen areas, and the facility as a whole to identify possible safety hazards and to ensure operations are being followed per policy.
  • Working rotating and various duty assignments within the defined level of work.
