Correctional Sergeant I
About The Position
This position is located at Hyde Correctional Institution in Swan Quarter County, NC. Work in this class involves first-line supervision to Correctional Officer I’s in minimum-custody facilities, increasing the custody and security coverage. The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina. Facilities are categorized by custody levels (minimum, medium, close) and house individuals serving sentences for felony convictions. The division provides safety, security, and rehabilitative services through trained custody staff, program facilitators, and administrative personnel.
Requirements
- High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of experience as a correctional officer; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- MUST be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
- Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
- Pass a criminal background check
- Produce a negative drug screening result
- Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
- Possess a valid driver’s license

Responsibilities
- Positions assign lower-level custody staff to a particular area or post.
- Employees oversee officer activities and performance and ensure that the custody, security and welfare of inmates is maintained.
- Employees arrange work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implement operational procedures and ensure rules and regulations are followed according to policy.
- Positions may at times be the highest-ranking custody staff on the grounds or the Officer-in-Charge (OIC).
