Correctional Sergeant l - Dan River Prison Work Farm
About The Position
This position is located at Dan River Prison Work Farm in Caswell, North Carolina, a minimum-custody prison housing male offenders. The Correctional Sergeant I reports to the Correctional Lieutenant I and supervises Correctional Officers. The role assists with planning work schedules and assigning posts and is responsible for officers’ activities related to the custody and welfare of offenders in a state correctional facility. Work is performed according to standard departmental procedures, with supplemental instructions received through the established chain of command. The employee may be rotated to various duty assignments and may perform other duties consistent with the defined level of work.
Requirements
- High school or GED diploma and two years of experience as a correctional officer, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
- Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302).
- Pass a criminal background check.
- Produce a negative drug screening result.
- Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations.
- Possess a valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities
- Assist and instruct officers in performing their duties and complete performance evaluations.
- Disseminate and interpret department rules and regulations to officers and offenders.
- Conduct frequent inspection tours to check that officers are alert, discipline is maintained, and assignments are carried out.
- Supervise offender counts and maintain records to ensure offenders are accounted for at all times.
- Supervise periodic searches of offender quarters for contraband.
- Conduct investigations and develop prison operational and emergency plans and post orders.
- Assist with planning work schedules and assigning posts.
- Supervise Correctional Officers and oversee their activities related to offender custody and welfare.
