About The Position

This is a Career Service position located at Central Office in Tallahassee, FL in the Bureau of Admission & Release. The mission of the Bureau of Admission and Release in the Florida Department of Corrections (FDC) is to ensure the accurate and efficient processing of inmates entering and exiting the correctional system. This position is not a telework position and is required to report to the FDC office in the area it serves.

Requirements

  • Must be currently employed with the Florida Department of Corrections.
  • Must possess a high school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Must have FIVE (5) years of experience working in a professional Classification, Correctional Officer Series, or Probation Officer position (professional classification includes Classification Officer or higher; Correctional Services Assistant Consultant or higher). Years of experience can be combined.
  • At least TWO (2) year of experience as a Correctional Services Consultant or higher in central office; or
  • At least ONE (1) year of experience as a Classification Supervisor – SES and/or SES Supervisor in region or central office; or
  • At least FIVE (5) years of experience as a Senior Classification Officer; or
  • At least FOUR (4) years of experience as a Senior Classification Officer and a college degree.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge and Expertise: Understand principles and practices of corrections, criminal justice, administration, problem-solving, and effective communication. Familiarity with automated systems, grievance processes, and policy development.
  • Technical Skills: Proficient in OBIS, Microsoft Office (especially Excel), Adobe Acrobat Pro, InDesign, Photo Express, web design tools (like Ibex and Dreamweaver), and creating electronic workflows, forms, and tracking systems.
  • Analytical and Problem-Solving Abilities: Skilled in gathering and analyzing information, evaluating programs, solving problems, and applying rules, regulations, policies, and procedures effectively.
  • Organizational and Leadership Skills: Capable of planning, organizing, and managing program activities, developing statewide programs, and creating policies and procedures to improve operations.
  • Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Strong verbal and written communication abilities, experience conducting interviews, building effective working relationships, and preparing detailed reports.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze legislative bills, track their progress, and assess their impact on the department. Update offense code sheets and recommend changes to administrative rules, procedure manuals, and technical documents.
  • Create, implement, and oversee statewide correctional programs, including staff training initiatives and inmate programs. Monitor and evaluate program outcomes and recommend improvements or new programs as needed.
  • Develop and maintain systems for tracking staff training, electronic workflows, and other processes to improve efficiency. Plan and implement quality review programs for admission and release procedures.
  • Respond to inquiries from inmate families, staff, law enforcement, courts, and government officials regarding sentencing, release policies, and related issues. Provide research and responses to leadership and external stakeholders.
  • Act as a liaison for technology-related matters, including managing the Offender Based Information System (OBIS-CIMS) and overseeing the development, testing, and implementation of system enhancements.
