About The Position

The Correctional Officer maintains the health, safety, and security of all personnel and inmates within the facility. This role ensures the safety and security of inmates and the public during inmate transports to court or medical facilities, and maintains the overall security of the correctional facility. This position is covered under the Teamsters - Jail bargaining unit. Eligible individuals may be placed on an Eligibility List for future vacancies, which will be used to fill both part-time and full-time positions. The salary range for 2026 is projected to be $24.74-$32.36/hr.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED
Two years of experience working in a role that requires interaction with others, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Class D Driver’s License
Must successfully complete a criminal history background check.

Responsibilities

Monitors inmates within the jail facility, directs their activities, and ensures their well-being in posted areas.
Checks cell blocks, interacts with inmates in different housing units, and ensures access to meals, personal hygiene items, clothing, and supplies.
Observes inmates for symptoms of health problems and notifies medical staff.
Dispenses prescribed medications and completes medication records.
Conducts inspections of posted areas for maintenance and security issues.
Searches inmate cells and common areas for contraband.
Performs inmate counts at the beginning and end of shifts.
Completes required documentation for inmates identified as security or suicide risks, and those in segregation.
Performs regularly scheduled well-being checks on inmates.
Supervises inmates, handles their questions, concerns, complaints, grievances, and violations.
Orients inmates on facility procedures, schedules, and expected behavior.
Provides direction to inmates on work assignments.
Completes shift logs and required documentation, including incident reports and disciplinary actions.
Uses interpersonal skills to build rapport with inmates, gain cooperation, and limit aggression.
Intervenes in disputes among inmates and uses physical restraint when necessary.
Relocates inmates to prevent confrontations.
Responds to and assists other officers during critical situations.
May be required to testify in court.
Provides security and monitors movement by controlling entrances and exits.
Operates security doors, controls access to specific areas, and monitors officer locations.
Controls phone communications and coordinates emergency response.
Monitors visitor access and visits to prevent contraband introduction.
Provides escort to visiting clergy or attorneys.
Performs proper and proficient use of all safety, security, and emergency equipment.
Participates in ongoing mandatory training and staff meetings.
Provides suggestions for operations and policies.
Interviews new arrivals, enters data into the computer, and checks inmate backgrounds.
Classifies inmates and determines the degree of security required.
Determines if inmates are under a physician-ordered treatment plan, including prescribed medications, and verifies medications.
Notifies medical personnel of inmate conditions and prescriptions.
Screens inmates on arrival to determine admission eligibility, need for immediate medical attention, or potential threat to others.
Searches inmates, secures and logs cash and personal property.
Photographs and fingerprints new arrivals.
May obtain urine samples and operate preliminary breath testers.
Introduces inmates to counseling opportunities.
Announces programs for training, education, recreation, or counseling and moves inmates to program areas.
Transports prisoners to and from detention or medical facilities, court, authorized leaves, or for custody transfer.
Follows security protocols during transit.
Collects, secures, and logs bond or bail.
