About The Position

The Department of Corrections (DOC) is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual for the position of Correctional Lieutenant at the Washington State Penitentiary (WSP). The WSP operates 24-hours a day, 7-days a week, housing approximately 2,200 incarcerated individuals and employing approximately 1,100 staff. The DOC aims to enhance public safety and administer criminal sanctions and programs in accordance with the law. This role is full-time, permanent, and falls under WMS Band 1.

Requirements

  • Graduation from High School or GED equivalent.
  • Two years' experience in an adult or juvenile correctional facility, law enforcement or related field.
  • At least two years of supervisor experience (can be gained concurrently with other required experience).
  • Demonstrated skills to communicate clearly, factually, and concisely both orally and in writing, in routine and emergency situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to recall detailed information, and maintain attention and concentration for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to remain calm and act professionally during all emergent conditions.
  • Ability to use de-escalation skills to manage stressful situations that involve abuse or hostility.
  • Must be able to provide proof of identity and eligibility to work in the United States consistent with the requirements of the federal employment eligibility verification form I-9.

Nice To Haves

  • Three years' experience as correctional sergeant in adult corrections.
  • One year experience as a correctional sergeant with successful completion of 30 semester or 45 quarter hours of accredited college level coursework.
  • Working knowledge of the principles and practices of correctional administration.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the daily operation of the facility in accordance with DOC policies and WSP Operational Memorandums.
  • Manage the incarcerated population and account for incarcerated individuals institution-wide.
  • Provide supervision and direction to Sergeants, Correctional Officers, and non-uniformed staff in their area of control.
  • Act as the Superintendent designee for the institution during non-business hours.
  • Manage Use of Force situations, utilizing all available resources and directing progressive use of force options.
  • Complete reporting requirements, conduct full reviews of documentation, and provide recommendations to the chain-of-command.
  • Provide concrete direction and a professional example to all correctional staff and other non-uniform staff.
  • Direct, monitor, and inspect correctional staff who perform custody work.
  • Control, direct, and monitor the activities and movement of adult incarcerated individuals.
  • Coordinate and enforce security regulations and offender disciplinary control throughout the correctional institution.
  • Exercise full command authority based on time and circumstances in directing all shift operations of the facility.
