About The Position

The Washington State Department of Corrections is seeking a dedicated leader to join the Clallam Bay Corrections Center team as a Correctional Lieutenant! The goal of this position is to direct, monitor and inspect correctional staff who perform custody work. In this role, you will oversee the activities and movements of adult incarcerated individuals, assume responsibility for coordinating and enforcing security regulations, and incarcerated disciplinary control throughout the correctional institution. You will be tasked with ensuring appropriate safety and security measures are followed and managing Use of Force situations with follow-up including reporting requirements, review of documentation, and providing recommendations to the chain of command. The Correctional Lieutenant provides leadership and guidance to Correctional Officers under their chain of command, ensuring compliance with all agency policies, applicable collective bargaining agreements, Merit System Rules, the Revised Code of Washington, Washington Administrative Codes, judicial procedures, division directives, operational memorandums, and post orders/operations manuals. You will facilitate employee development including training, coaching, mentoring, counseling, and conflict resolution. Requirements

  • Graduation from High School or GED AND Two years of correctional experience in adult, juvenile, law enforcement or related field AND At least two years supervisory experience (can be gained concurrently with other required experience) OR One year experience as a Correctional Sergeant AND Successful completion of 30 semester or 45 quarter hours of accredited college level course work
  • Demonstrated skills to communicate clearly, factually and concisely both orally and in writing, in routine and emergency situations
  • Demonstrated ability to recall detailed information and maintain attention and concentration for extended periods of time
  • Remains calm and acts professionally during all emergency conditions
  • Ability to use de-escalation skills to manage stressful situations that involve abuse or hostility
  • Possess and maintain a vehicle operator’s license valid in the state of Washington
  • Eligible to use and/or possess a firearm under Federal Law 18 USC-Section 922 and RCW 9.41.040 and qualify annually with a rifle, pistol and shotgun as required

Responsibilities

  • Managing the Use of Force situations utilizing all available resources to include mitigating alternatives such as directing the progressive use of force options which could include: Completing reporting requirements, full review of documentation and providing recommendations to chain of command
  • Acting as the Incident Commander, managing and directing institution emergencies at the Institution and coordinating responses with outside agencies
  • Maintaining security of the institution in accordance with established department methods and procedures by managing staff and incarcerated accountability, controlling movement into, out of, and within the institution, shift security, staff, incarcerated movement (adjusting as necessary), incarcerated programing and incarcerated work areas
  • Clearing the institution count and maintaining a high level of management visibility within the institution
  • Notifying the Duty Officer of significant events and/or incidents of concern
  • Initiating incident specific packet documentation gathering to include specific emergency checklists, incident reports, etc., in support of Incident Command, Incident Review and Intelligence and Investigation gathering
  • Ensuring appropriate safety and security measures are followed during transports to safeguard staff, incarcerated and community
  • Managing Use of Force situations utilizing all available resources
  • Completing reporting requirements, full review of documentation, and providing recommendations to chain of command
  • Providing direct supervision to the correctional sergeants as they monitor correctional officers completing their day-to-day security operations to include: Ensuring compliance with all agency policies, applicable collective bargaining agreements, Merit System Rules, the Revised Code of Washington, Washington Administrative Codes, judicial procedures, division directives, operational memorandums and post orders/operations manuals
  • Daily roster management for Correctional staff and staff accountability
