Correctional Lieutenant II-Avery Mitchell Correctional Institution
About The Position
This position is located at Avery Mitchell Correctional Institution in Avery County, North Carolina, a medium-custody male facility. Reporting to a Correctional Captain II, the Correctional Lieutenant II plans, supervises, and coordinates activities that are primarily custodial in nature, including serving as shift supervisor. The position is designated as mandatory and must report to work or remain on duty during adverse weather events. This is an internal posting open to current North Carolina Department of Adult Correction employees, eligible North Carolina state-government reduction-in-force candidates, and current temporary employees.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED and two years and six months of experience as a Correctional Sergeant, or two years of experience as a Correctional Sergeant II; an equivalent combination of education and experience may qualify.
- Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.
- Applicants for criminal-justice-certified positions must meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements, pass a criminal background check and drug screening, successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations, and possess a valid driver’s license.
- Applicants must complete the state application in full, including education history, work experience, and applicable certificates and licenses.

Responsibilities
- Serve as the first-line supervisor of Correctional Sergeant II staff.
- Serve as Officer-in-Charge in the absence of the Correctional Captain.
- Assist with personnel actions, administrative affairs, and officers’ work schedules.
- Coordinate activities involving discipline, security, and the welfare of the offender population.
- Inspect housing units, buildings, grounds, and posts to ensure officers are alert, discipline is maintained, and assignments are carried out properly.
