About The Position

Reporting to the Associate Warden of Custody at a minimum custody male correctional facility, this position serves as the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) who is responsible for the daily operations of the correctional facility ensuring security is maintained according to NC Department of Adult Correction (DAC) Policy and Procedures and Facility Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Requirements

  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND two years of experience as a Correctional Sergeant ; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license

Nice To Haves

  • Documented experience with report writing.
  • Documented knowledge of Prison Policies and Procedures/or Facility Operations.

Responsibilities

  • Providing direct supervision of the assigned Sergeant I.
  • Conducting shift line-up, making shift assignments and inspecting all personnel to determine if they are physically and mentally capable of assuming an assigned post.
  • Conducting daily inspections of housing units, building and grounds to identify safety hazards and inspecting posts to ascertain that officers are alert, that discipline is being maintained and that assignments are carried out properly to ensure the operation is running smoothly.
  • Conducting and reviewing investigations regarding security issues incidents, disputes and complaints.
  • Conducting searches of staff, visitors and offenders for contraband.
  • Responding to emergency situations as needed.
  • Assisting in planning and supervising personnel actions, time reports, staff evaluations, officer work schedules, and training.
  • Assisting in the coordination and planning of activities involving discipline, security, and the welfare of the offender population.
  • Preparing a variety of records and reports related to custody operations and other related duties as required.
