About The Position

This position is located at Pasquotank Correctional Institution, in Elizabeth City, NC. This is in Pasquotank County. The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina. Facilities are categorized by custody levels (minimum, medium, close) and house individuals serving sentences for felony convictions. The division provides safety, security, and rehabilitative services through trained custody staff, program facilitators, and administrative personnel.

Requirements

  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and five years of correctional experience, three of which must have been at the supervisory level; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license

Nice To Haves

  • Documented knowledge of report writing
  • Documented knowledge of case management practices, or supportive counseling techniques, and/or interviewing techniques for intake assessments
  • Documented knowledge of Prison Policies and Procedures and/or Facility Operations

Responsibilities

  • Managing the operations of an institutional housing unit within a close-custody correctional institution, which may include controlled or restrictive housing, medical or mental health units.
  • Supervising staff.
  • Determining and evaluating program design necessary to meet the needs of the inmate population.
  • Coordinating the programs and services with program and custody staff.
  • Responsible for the programmatic/operational orientation of inmates which includes education, mental health, administrative and disciplinary segregation and work assignments.
  • Chairing the facility classification committee and being the final approving authority on unit classification and disciplinary committees.
  • Establishing daily and weekly work schedules of staff to ensure coverage.
  • Scheduling and directing staff involved in investigating inmate grievances and administering disciplinary actions.
  • Providing on-the-job training as needed.
  • Establishing standards within the unit.
  • Reviewing work of staff through review of use of force and incident reports, grievance investigations, classification actions, daily activity reports, and the case management system.
