About The Position

This position is located at Pasquotank Correctional Institution in Elizabeth City, Pasquotank County, NC. The role involves managing the operations of an institutional housing unit within a close-custody correctional institution. This may include managing controlled or restrictive housing, or medical or mental health units. The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction is a large state agency with over 14,000 employees, responsible for the care, custody, and supervision of adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. The department includes state prisons, probation/parole services, and various support divisions.

Requirements

  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and five years of correctional experience, three of which must have been at a supervisory level; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

Responsibilities

  • Managing the operations of an institutional housing unit.
  • Supervising staff.
  • Determining and evaluating program design to meet the needs of the inmate population.
  • Coordinating programs and services with program and custody staff.
  • Overseeing the programmatic/operational orientation of inmates, including education, mental health, administrative and disciplinary segregation, and work assignments.
  • Chairing the facility classification committee and serving as the final approving authority on unit classification and disciplinary committees.
  • Establishing daily and weekly work schedules for staff to ensure coverage.
  • Scheduling and directing staff involved in investigating inmate grievances and administering disciplinary actions.
  • Providing on-the-job training as needed.
  • Establishing standards within the unit.
  • Reviewing the work of staff through various reports, including use of force, incident reports, grievance investigations, classification actions, daily activity reports, and the case management system.
