About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! Salary Range: $37,782 - $66,120 Reporting to a Correctional Housing Unit Manager III, this position is responsible for managing the operations of an institutional housing unit within a close-custody correctional facility.

Requirements

  • MUST be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • Supervisory skills in a prison facility
  • Knowledge of facility operations
  • Knowledge of Prisons’ policy and procedures
  • Report writing skills
  • Supportive counseling skills
  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and five years of correctional experience, two of which must have been at the supervisory level Or An equivalent combination of education and experience

Responsibilities

  • Monitoring of the unit case management system which entails providing individual counseling, participating in group sessions, and maintaining reports related to an offender’s progress.
  • Coordinating with program staff, supervising custody staff, and in the absence of the supervisor, assuming responsibility for the management of the unit.
  • Serving on Institution Classification Committees.
  • Assisting the supervisor with training, scheduling, and adjusting work schedules.
  • Reviewing the work of staff through use of force and incident reports, grievance investigations, classification actions, daily activity reports, and the case management system.
  • Assigning work to subordinates utilizing standard operating procedures.
  • Reviewing housing inspections performed by custody staff and disciplinary investigations.
  • Counseling staff as needed and giving oral and first written warnings.
