About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is a large state agency responsible for the care, custody, and supervision of adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons, probation/parole services, and various support divisions. The agency's mission is to safeguard lives and property through prevention, protection, preparation, and rehabilitation. This position, reporting to a Correctional Programs Supervisor at a multi-custody male correctional facility, provides case management services to an assigned caseload of offenders. The role involves performing classification reviews, needs assessments, developing plans, assigning jobs, referring to programs, and conducting regular one-on-one counseling. It also includes providing transitional information, assisting with housing and classification recommendations, and supporting onsite activities. Effective communication with staff, offenders, and the public is essential. The position requires working under stressful conditions due to direct contact with incarcerated offenders, who may exhibit violent or verbally abusive behavior. The employee must be capable of self-defense and performing crisis interventions, including suicide prevention. Additionally, the role involves preparing written reports, analyzing data from various sources, and evaluating offender behavior through interviews, documentation, and observation. This is a certified position, and employees may be required to assist in any certified capacity as needed.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Criminal Justice, Human Services, Recreation or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution; OR High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND two years of custody experience within the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction ; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license

Nice To Haves

  • Documented knowledge of case management practices, or supportive counseling techniques and/or interviewing techniques for intake assessments.

Responsibilities

  • Performing regular periodic classification reviews, needs assessments, plans, job assignments, program referrals and regular scheduled one-on-one contact for the purposes of correctional and/or motivational counseling.
  • Providing transitional information, assisting with housing and recommendations for the classification upon offender review and assisting with onsite activities.
  • Communicating effectively with other staff, offenders, and the general public.
  • Working under stressful conditions caused by direct contact with incarcerated offenders, who can become physically violent and verbally abusive, being capable of defending oneself against attack and performing crisis interventions to include suicide prevention.
  • Preparing written reports which accurately reflect data reviewed by various sources, reviewing, analyzing, and evaluating various documents and behavior data gathered from interviews, written documentation, and personal observation.
  • This is a certified position and employees may be subject to assist in any certified capacity as needed.
