About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina. Facilities are categorized by custody levels (minimum, medium, close) and house individuals serving sentences for felony convictions. The division provides safety, security, and rehabilitative services through trained custody staff, program facilitators, and administrative personnel.

Requirements

Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice, Human Services, Recreation or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution; or High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of custody experience within the North Carolina Department of Public Safety; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

Responsibilities

Carry a caseload of offenders, which involves supportive counseling, conducting assessments, developing case plans, answering and following up on offender questions and problems, and making recommendations to the classification committee for a male minimum custody facility.
Assist in major dynamic programs or coordinate major or specialized programs for the rehabilitation of offenders such as offender work assignments, education, or recreation, as well as transition planning and coordinating.
Plan and coordinate transition (re-entry) prior to parole or release into the community.
Effective verbal and written communication with other staff, offenders, and the general public.
Be capable of defending oneself against attack by violent persons.
Work under stressful conditions caused by direct contact with incarcerated offenders.
Conduct continuous visual and audio surveillance of assigned work area.
Prepare written reports and forms which accurately reflect information reviewed from various screens.
Review, analyze, and evaluate various documents and behavior data gathered from interviews, written documentation, and personal observation.
Perform crisis interventions and routine counseling to include suicide prevention.
Basic keyboarding skills and the ability to learn and use the OPUS computer system.
