About The Position

This position is located at Mountain View Correctional Institution in Spruce Pine, NC. This facility is a medium custody male facility. This job posting will close at 11:59 pm, the night before the end date listed above. Reporting to a Correctional Programs Supervisor, this position is responsible for carrying a caseload of offenders, conducting initial assessments of offender needs, developing case plans, answering and following up on offender questions and problems, and making recommendations to the classification committee.

Requirements

Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice, Human Services, Recreation or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution; or High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of custody experience within the North Carolina Department of Public Safety; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
Pass a criminal background check
Produce a negative drug screening result
Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
Possess a valid driver’s license

Responsibilities

Assisting in major dynamic programs or coordinating major specialized programs for the rehabilitation of offenders, such as, offender work assignments, work release, education, or recreation; as well as transition planning and coordinating.
Planning and coordinating transition (re-entry) prior to parole or release into the community for offenders.
Providing Supportive Counseling techniques and interviewing skills.
Working knowledge of Prisons’ policies and procedures.
Gathering and evaluating information concerning an individual’s past experience(s), training, attitude, social environment, and mental capabilities.
Working knowledge of correctional programs and services available to individuals from the community and other public and private programs.
Developing, implementing, coordinating, and supervising a program within the framework of Prisons’ policies and procedures.
Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.
Working under stressful conditions caused by direct contact with incarcerated offenders, who can become physically violent and/or verbally abusive.
Defending oneself against attacks by violent persons.
Working some evening hours, weekends, and holidays.
