About The Position

This position is located at Mountain View Correctional Institution in Spruce Pine, NC. This facility is a medium custody male facility. This job posting will close at 11:59 pm, the night before the end date listed above. Reporting to a Correctional Programs Supervisor, this position is responsible for carrying a caseload of offenders, conducting initial assessments of offender needs, developing case plans, answering and following up on offender questions and problems, and making recommendations to the classification committee.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice, Human Services, Recreation or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution; or High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of custody experience within the North Carolina Department of Public Safety; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license

Responsibilities

  • Assisting in major dynamic programs or coordinating major specialized programs for the rehabilitation of offenders, such as, offender work assignments, work release, education, or recreation; as well as transition planning and coordinating.
  • Planning and coordinating transition (re-entry) prior to parole or release into the community for offenders.
  • Providing Supportive Counseling techniques and interviewing skills.
  • Working knowledge of Prisons’ policies and procedures.
  • Gathering and evaluating information concerning an individual’s past experience(s), training, attitude, social environment, and mental capabilities.
  • Working knowledge of correctional programs and services available to individuals from the community and other public and private programs.
  • Developing, implementing, coordinating, and supervising a program within the framework of Prisons’ policies and procedures.
  • Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Working under stressful conditions caused by direct contact with incarcerated offenders, who can become physically violent and/or verbally abusive.
  • Defending oneself against attacks by violent persons.
  • Working some evening hours, weekends, and holidays.
