About The Position

This position is located in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina at Mountain View Correctional Institution in Avery County. Mountain View is a medium custody male facility that houses approximately 908 offenders. We offer a variety of educational classes and programs to promote offender rehabilitation. The Correctional Lieutenant functions in a critical role to ensure the safety and security of staff and inmates alike by providing direct supervision, leadership and experience. This position will provide supervision for subordinate staff, conduct shift line-up, makeshift assignments, and inspect all personnel to determine if they are physically and mentally capable of assuming as assigned post. Complete review and maintain time reports, duty rosters, leave schedules, performance evaluations and administrative forms. Account for persons and funds to ensure that all assigned equipment is operationally ready. Identify training needs and coordinate delivery of training to subordinate staff. Conduct investigations. Develop prison operational, emergency plans, and post orders.

Requirements

  • MUST be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years six months of experience as a Correctional Sergeant, or two years of experience as a Correctional Sergeant II; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Respond at any time to emergency calls and perform rescue functions when necessary.
