About The Position

This position is located at Roanoke River Correctional Institution in Halifax County, NC. Employees in this class carry a caseload of inmates, which involves supportive counseling, conducting assessments, developing case plans, answering and following up on inmate questions and problems, and making recommendations to the classification committee for a medium custody facility to include management of a minimum custody facility which is managed within the scope of the larger institution. Employees also assist in major dynamic programs or coordinate major or specialized programs for the rehabilitation of inmates, such as inmate work assignments, work release, education, or recreation as well as transition planning and coordinating. Employees in this class plan and coordinate transition (re-entry) prior to parole or release into the community.

Requirements

  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission
  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice, Human Services, Recreation or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution; or High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of custody experience within the North Carolina Department of Public Safety; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

  • Working under stressful conditions caused by direct contact with incarcerated offenders who can become physically violent and verbally abusive
  • Conducting continuous visual and audio surveillance of assigned work area
  • Preparing written reports and forms
  • Reviewing, analyzing, and evaluating various documents and behavior data gathered from interviews, written documentation, and personal observation
  • Performing crisis interventions and routine counseling to include suicide prevention
  • Basic keyboarding skills and the ability to learn and use the OPUS computer system
