About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! Positions are located at Bertie Correctional Institute in Windsor, North Carolina. Reporting to a Correctional Programs Supervisor.

Requirements

  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice, Human Services, Recreation or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution; or High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of custody experience within the North Carolina Department of Public Safety; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

  • Documented knowledge of Prison Policy and Procedures and/or Facility Operations.

Responsibilities

  • Assessing offender behavior and developing counseling strategies to achieve desired offender progress.
  • Answering offender questions, giving information about classification and sentencing status, corresponding with offender families, and providing supportive counseling.
  • Organizing and directing the activities of various rehabilitation programs provided for offenders.
  • Conducting work release and home leave investigations, coordinating community resources, planning and coordinating transition (re-entry) prior to parole or release into the community.
  • Making recommendations to the offender classification committees on an offenders’ program involvement or custody level change.
  • Working with offenders whose problems, needs, and comprehension levels, vary greatly.
  • Serving in a custody role during certain activities and working some evening hours, weekends, and holidays.
