About The Position

This position is assigned to Maury Correctional Institution and will be located in a housing unit within the custody area. The role requires effective verbal and written communication with staff, offenders, and the general public. The individual must be capable of defending themselves against attack by violent persons and be able to work under stressful conditions due to direct contact with incarcerated offenders who may become physically violent or verbally abusive. Responsibilities include conducting continuous visual and audio surveillance of the assigned work area, accurately operating office machines, preparing written reports and forms, and demonstrating/instructing offenders in the proper and safe use of tools, equipment, and supplies. The position also involves reviewing, analyzing, and evaluating various documents and behavioral data, performing crisis intervention and routine counseling (including suicide prevention), accounting for supplies and equipment, and implementing/managing correctional programs.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of policies and procedures of prisons.
  • Working knowledge of techniques of supportive counseling and interviewing.
  • Ability to gather and evaluate information concerning an individual's past experience, training attitude, social environment, and mental capabilities.
  • Working knowledge of correctional programs.
  • Working knowledge of services available to individuals from the community and other public and private programs.
  • Ability to develop, implement, coordinate, and supervise a program within the framework of policies and procedures of Prisons.
  • Ability to communicate effective, both orally and in writing.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

Responsibilities
