Requirements

  • Two years of experience as a Correctional Lieutenant with the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation, and Reentry.
  • Must receive a performance evaluation rating of meets expectations or better.
  • Ineligible to apply for one year from the date of suspension.
  • Employees accepting a voluntary demotion shall be required to remain in the classification/position requested for a period of at least two years before being considered for appointment to any other position.
  • Voluntary demotion applicants must have an approved voluntary demotion memo on file with CPR to be considered for a job offer.
  • Any employee who has been demoted one level shall be ineligible to apply for a promotional opportunity for two years from the date of the demotion.
  • If demoted more than one level, the employee shall be ineligible to apply for a promotional opportunity for three years from the date of the demotion.
  • A demotion received after the promotional process has started and prior to the promotion shall result in the permanent removal from that CPR.
  • Once removed from a CPR for a demotion, the applicant shall not be eligible to compete for a Correctional Officer Series position until two or three years, depending on the number of levels demoted, after the date of the demotion.
  • Must maintain the additional requirements to remain in the recruitment process.
  • Each promotion or different position with the same employer must be listed separately on the resume and must include adequate work history identifying experience, duties, qualifications, selective requirements, and/or preferences must be reflected on the resume in order to receive applicable credit.
  • Employees who are offered a position and have been out of security positions for more than two years will be required to attend COTA training.
  • If you are currently working outside of the correctional series you will have to undergo the correctional officer hire procedures.
  • Requires possession of and ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver's license appropriate to the assignment.
  • Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver's license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any required driver training.

Responsibilities

  • Develop duty (shift) rosters, posts and assure compliance.
  • Review incident reports, initiate investigations and recommend or initiate prescribed actions.
  • Evaluate staff and prepare reports.
  • Serve in absence of a Correctional Major and/or a Correctional Administrator.
  • Serve as Chief of Security or Assistant Chief of Security for a unit.
  • Manage and supervise, through Correctional Lieutenants, the security, custody and discipline of inmate populations.
  • Inspect all areas to assure proper security and safety for staff and inmates.
  • Direct the security, custody and discipline practices and procedures of a unit.
  • Assure all assigned staff are trained and functioning in the prescribed manner.
  • Ensure all communication records, sanitation, safety and security of designated areas are maintained as prescribed by policies.
  • Plan and implement prescribed security, custody, order and discipline practices and procedures.
  • Gather, compile, analyze, prepare and submit recommendations for operating budgets, staffing position, hiring or disciplinary actions or staff and other related administrative activities.
  • Serve as member of classification, disciplinary and other staff committees; review reports and recommendations, analyze and prepare final recommendations or decisions, as appropriate.
  • Attend meetings of the inmates’ care and treatment teams; participate in reviews and analysis of reports; provide and receive information; participate in decision making; assure that security staff is briefed on proper security activities and that inmates are provided due process and movements, as decided.
  • Develop and distribute security operating procedures and assure compliance by security staff.
  • Conduct inspections of duty areas to evaluate and effect changes, as required; prepare and submit required reports.
  • Provide and encourage in-service training for all security staff to improve and enhance work activities.
  • Serve as “Duty Officer of the Day” on a rotation schedule, as required.
  • Interact with staff and inmates; receive and provide information, including paraprofessional counseling and crisis intervention, as indicated; prepare reports with recommendations; initiate appropriate actions.
  • Attend unit staff meetings as chairperson; listen and direct discussion; lead in problem solving and decision-making.
  • Attend institutional and department level staff meetings; provide and receive information; participate in problem solving and decision-making.
  • Confer with superior; discuss work related problems, including employee/inmate relationships; participate in problem solving and decision-making.
  • Perform related work as required.
