About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! Reporting to the Associate Warden for Custody, this position provides supervision of subordinate staff and is responsible for the custody and security of the facility, and the safety of the general public.

Requirements

  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of experience as a Correctional Lieutenant, or 2 years of experience as a Correctional Lieutenant III; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.

Nice To Haves

  • Documented experience with report writing.
  • Documented knowledge of Prison Policies and Procedures/or Facility Operations.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure that all custody staff assigned to the facility are physically and mentally capable of assuming a duty post.
  • Provide daily inspections of offender living, medical, and kitchen areas.
  • Evaluate weapons and other security equipment are inspected and in good working condition.
  • Supervise daily counts, reviewing staffing needs and Standard Operating Procedures to make suggestions for revisions, as needed.
  • Complete, review, and maintain time reports, duty rosters, leave schedules, performance evaluations, and administrative forms.
  • Conduct investigations and serving as the Officer-in-Charge (OIC), as required.
