About The Position

This position is located at Roanoke River Correctional Institution with a duty assignment to the medium custody facility. This position provides direct supervision for a Correctional Lieutenant II. Employee in this class serves as the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the facility for the assigned shift. Position will conduct shift line-up, make post assignments, inspect all personnel to determine if they are physically and mentally capable of assuming an assigned post, and ensure that all assigned equipment is operationally ready. This position will complete, review, and maintain employees’ time, duty rosters, leave schedules, performance evaluations, and administrative forms. Position will provide daily inspections of the facility to include offender living areas and medical and kitchen areas to identify possible safety hazards and to ensure the operation is running smoothly. Position will identify training needs and coordinate delivery of training to subordinate staff. This position will supervise daily offender counts for accuracy, scheduling transportation and transfers of offenders, conduct searches of staff, visitors and offenders for contraband and respond to emergency situations as needed. Position will also conduct internal investigations and will serve as an Investigator completing OSI investigations, develop operational, emergency plans, post orders and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) as needed.

Requirements

  • High school or General Education Development (GED) diploma and two years six months of experience as a Correctional Lieutenant, or two years of experience as a Correctional Lieutenant II; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • Must pass a criminal background check.
  • Must produce a negative drug screening result.
  • Must successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.
