Johnson County Department of Corrections is looking for qualified applicants to fill the position of Correctional Advisor at the Adult Residential Center (ARC) in New Century, Kansas. The ARC is a minimum security correctional facility serving adult offenders on an open campus, striving to cultivate an environment of responsibility and accountability through evidence-based behavior change practices. Correctional Advisors are direct care staff who interact with clients from various backgrounds with criminal records, focusing on substance abuse treatment, mental health services, employment/technical skills, education, and basic life skills to establish a stable foundation for re-entry into the community. The ARC has three components: Residential (for probation supervision), Work Release (for transitioning inmates), and Therapeutic Community (for intensive substance abuse treatment). The open campus environment allows clients to work in the community. Correctional Advisors do not carry weapons and do not physically engage offenders unless for self-defense or defense of others. The ARC operates 24 hours a day, requiring shift work and overtime. As a Correctional Advisor, you will help shape behaviors and create lasting change in clients by building healthy relationships, serving as a role model, teaching and reinforcing behaviors, teaching coping skills and de-escalation techniques, and providing a secure and clean working environment through searches. This role requires individuals who are adaptable, team-oriented, able to manage emotions under stress, and possess integrity, professionalism, humility, humor, and respect. The job is demanding but rewarding.
