Correction Officer
About The Position
The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers, and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 7,500 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts.
Requirements
- Must be able to maintain security and be responsible for the care, custody, control, job training and work performance of sentenced and detained inmates.
- Must be able to supervise inmate meals, visits, recreational programs, and other congregate activities.
- Must be able to inspect assigned areas for conditions which threaten safety and security.
- Must be able to conduct searches in order to detect contraband.
- Must be able to complete forms and reports.
- Must be able to maintain appropriate log books.
- Must be able to communicate with other area Correction Officers to exchange pertinent information.
- Must be able to issue verbal orders, announcements and explanations to inmates.
- Must be able to observe inmates and make recommendations concerning medical and/or psychiatric referrals.
- Must be able to safeguard Department supplies and equipment.
- Must be able to escort inmates within and outside of the facility including their transportation in Departmental vehicles.
- Must be able to respond to unusual incidents and disturbances.
- Must be able to enforce security procedures in accordance with Department guidelines.
- Must be able to request medical assistance for inmates when necessary.
- Must be able to count and verify the number of inmates present in assigned areas.
- Must be able to verify identification of inmates.
- Must be able to supervise inmates of either sex.
- Must be able to operate a motor vehicle.
Responsibilities
