About The Position

This examination is being administered by the Human Resources Division (HRD) to establish an eligible list from which to fill Head Cook vacancies in the Massachusetts Department of Correction. The written examination will be designed to test knowledge, abilities, and skills for the position of Head Cook. Candidates must meet age and education requirements by the date of appointment. The application process requires an examination processing fee, with provisions for fee waivers under certain circumstances. Credit for prior employment/experience as a Head Cook can be claimed and verified. Preference is given to veterans, disabled veterans, and children of correction officers who meet specific criteria. Requirements

Must be 19 years of age on or before February 5, 2027, to take the examination.
Must be at least 21 years of age by the date of appointment as Head Cook.
Must have either a high school diploma or equivalency certificate approved by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, or three years of experience in the armed forces of the United States with last release or discharge under honorable conditions, as of the date of appointment.
Examination processing fee of $75 must be received by the application deadline.
