The Correction Lieutenant supervises correction officers (CO’s) and Correction Sergeants/Counselors assigned to one or more posts/areas or special duty. They instruct and evaluate CO’s, assign staff to posts, and enforce post orders and assignments. The role involves ensuring CO’s and correction sergeants/counselors are alert, attentive, and properly placed by inspecting each post. Responsibilities include enforcing the utilization of body-worn cameras and body scanners, conducting surveillance security of the institution and property, and preventing escapes or incidents that threaten security and safety, which may involve using physical force. The Lieutenant makes constant rounds to inspect cells, shops, recreation areas, and dining rooms for cleanliness, safety compliance, contraband, and general security. They monitor and direct custody operations during inmate movements and attend monthly unit meetings to assist in supervising Correction Officers. The role also involves assisting in supervising meaningful activities, developing and enforcing memorandums of understanding, ensuring the availability and utilization of personnel protective equipment (PPE), responding to the needs of incarcerated persons, managing disputes, and reporting complaints of abuse by employees. Participation in team approach to unit planning, operation, and problem-solving, responding to emergencies, gathering information, and writing reports are also key duties. Additionally, the Lieutenant completes employee and incarcerated worker performance evaluations, schedules work assignments, population bed movement, meals, and educational/recreational activities, and serves on rules infraction boards or other committees. Ensuring the safety and security of equipment and supplies is also a responsibility.
